What are trackers (pixels) and why are they key in online advertising?

How trackers work: facebook pixel, GA4, TikTok pixel and Hotjar

In the world of online marketing you will often come across terms such as Facebook pixel, TikTok pixel, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) or Hotjar. They are all called trackers (tracking tools) that help you understand what's happening on your website - and more importantly, how you can generate more revenue from it.

What are trackers?

Tracers are snippets of code that you embed in your website. They collect data about visitor behaviour, such as:

  • what pages they look at,
  • how much time they spend there,
  • what they click on,
  • whether or not to buy,

Among the best known tools are:

  • Meta (Facebook pixel),
  • TikTok (TikTok pixel),
  • Google (Google Analytics 4 - GA4),
  • Hotjar (behavioural analysis).

What do they do in practice?

1. Data collection

Trackers collect data about users - of course in compliance with GDPR rules (e.g. cookie consent).

2. Measuring conversions

They show that a visitor is coming from an advertisement:

  • whether you have bought,
  • whether you have subscribed,
  • whether you have filled in a form.

3. Audience building (remarketing)

For example:

  • who visited the website but did not make a purchase → retargeted ad,
  • who added a product to your shopping cart → reminder campaign.

4. Campaign optimisation

Advertising systems (e.g. Meta or Google) learn from this data and find better and better audiences.

How do they relate to advertising?

Without the trackers, the ads go virtually „blind”.

Meta (Facebook) pixel

A Meta advertising system using pixels:

  • learn who is shopping,
  • looking for similar people (lookalike audience),
  • optimise campaigns.

TikTok pixel

A TikTok pixel works similarly, but is particularly powerful:

  • impulse buying,
  • younger target groups.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

A Google system:

  • gives a complete picture of user behaviour,
  • helps you optimise your SEO and advertising,
  • can be linked to Google Ads.

Hotjar

A Hotjar not a classic advertising tool, but:

  • provides heat maps (heatmap),
  • shows user behaviour on video,
  • shows where the viewer is getting lost on the website,

so it helps to increase conversions.

Why are they important?

If there is no proper tracking:

❌ you don't know which ad will make you money,
❌ you can't remarket,
❌ advertising algorithms cannot learn,
❌ you make bad decisions without data.

But if it is set up correctly:

✅ an accurately measurable ROI (return on investment),
✅ cheaper ads,
✅ more conversions,
✅ scalable campaigns.

Common errors I see on websites:

  • pixels are not installed on all pages,
  • there is no event tracking (e.g. purchase, cart, form fill button),
  • wrong GDPR/cookie setting: the code collects data even when the user has not (yet) consented to the collection,
  • the tracker is not linked to an advertising account,
  • double measurement (incorrect data).

Summary

Trackers are the foundation of online marketing. Without them, you cannot advertise effectively. If you're serious about growth, setting up the right tracking is not optional - it's mandatory. If you want help with this, sign up for a free consultation.
